This coming Tuesday in Iowa the rubber hits the road in the GOP presidential race.  I cannot predict who will win but I will predict the first three finishers (not necessarily in this order):  Romney, Paul and Santorum.  If Paul or Santorum win, that will be ok with the Ro mney people.  They know they can defeat either one down the road.

Which brings us to the nub of the question.  The GOP race is over before it has formally begun .  Governor Romney is the winner and he will be the nhas nominee.  Mainly because of his opposition.  Consider –

Gingrich has brains but little money and less organization;  Ron Paul has brains and money but is too off the wall especially on foreign policy when he says it’s no problem if Iran has a nuclear bomb;  Perry has money and organization but no brains;   Huntsman has brains and money but is viewed as a Democrat posing as a Republican;  Bachman has neither brains, money or organization.  I expect she will drop out after Iowa.  Maybe Perry too.

So in November, 2012, it will be Obama vs. Romney;  Obama will win a second term in a relatively close race.  Consider;  If Romney cannot get above 25 per cent support in his own party, how can he win a general election?  He won’t.  Obama wins going away. Oh yes, for the election Hillary and Joe Biden might well change places.

Back here at home, Topp will win the NDP leadership defeating Mulcair – who is my candidate.  Bob Rae will break his promise not to run for the permanent Liberal leadership and he will win it easily.

Pope Benedict who is growing feeble and fatigued (85 years old) may well abdicate the papacy.  He will be succeeded by another rock-ribbed conservative – maybe even Cardinal Ouellet, a French-Canadian.

Meryl Streep will win an Oscar for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

The Boston Patriots will win the Super bowl on the arm of Tom Brady.

Do you have any predictions for 2012?

And a Happy New Year to all.
