The NHL is going through a very bad  patch.  It’s best player, crosby,  is suffering from concussion.   Three players are dead, two suicides.  There is a groundswell to cut back on fighting in the NHL to avoid further serious injuries.

All are in favour of fewer injuries  it would seem, except Don Cherry, the thug in CBC’s Coaches Corner.  In a rant last week, Cherry singled out  three former players calling them  ” a bunch of pukes” because they publicly suggested those who fight in the NHL are more likely to turn to substance abuse.

Retired forward, Stu grimson, says Cherry went too far this time.  “He’s edging ever closer to the line …. and I think there will come a point when he steps over the line and the CBC decides it’s time to shut the senile old uncle down..”

Frankly, I  don’t think the CBC brass have the guts to shut cherry down.  Besides his program, despite the rants, is a money-maker.

Should the CBC shut down Don C herry?

What do you think?

Never mind Don Knotts, Let CBC dump his holyship Peter Mansbridge!

It makes sense to prevent as many injuries or death as possible. Don Cherry will not change. Is it really necessary to have someone that does not care about the players and the children that see violence in hockey glorified? If no one would watch it CBC might change its mind. This is part of why I not watch or listen to hockey.

I like Don Cherry. He adds a lot of “colour” to the game and is very knowledgeable.
His suits are so horrible, they border on the obscene.
I don’t agree with his many opinions on fighting…at all, but I don’t think that CBC will cancel him, as long as he has a following. That’s fair!
I don’t watch much hockey because of the roughness-It detracts from the game.

    Neil McKenty Says:

Why in the world does the CBC retain in the broadcast booth a thug who, if his threats were made to an ordinary citizen, would be cause for criminal charges.

As for Pastor Mansbridge – now that is another matter.

Neil, what problem do you have with Ron???

  7. 7
    Neil McKenty Says:

None, except that he’s Cherry’s trained lapdog

I don’t like Grapes’ mouth, so I don’t listen to him. But he’s popular with a certain segment of hockey fandom, so let him stay. Doesn’t bother me one way or another.

“Grapes” Cherry was voted one of the top ten greatest Canadians by the people of Canada. His grandfather was a Captain on one of the ships in the company I worked for at the time. I think he died at the age of 92. If his longevity is a marker, the anti-Cherry crowd can look ahead to many years of gnashing something or other. Does anyone think that the CBC is going to censure a great Canadian’s freedom to speak? If so what did he say that was verboten to soft ears. Personally I think he should join SNL. He would earn more money there. Whilst he’s there, he would probably lay off putting down the French Canadians because the U.S.ers wouldn’t know what he is talking about. In the meantime we have to let the old fart climb the pinnacle of posh, do rumble and bumble, and flap and doodle, it’s all balder and dash. Change channels, it may help.

    youngshoutman Says:

Many people enjoy his comments and even more his everchanging range of suits, therefore he should stay but with perhaps an apology and a warning from the CBC?

  11. 11

For what should he apologize? Somebody got their nose out of joint again? Anybody ever hear of the right to free speech?

Anyone who is offended by what he says has the right not to listen to him.

    youngshoutman Says:

there was no reason to insult anyone at the time, and free speech does not mean going around insulting everyone

    Graham Says:

Yes get rid of the arrogant old man. My tax dollar helps keep the CBC going and that means it also helps pay Dom Cherry to be on Hockey Night in Canada for 10 minutes a week and get quarter of a million a year. What a joke,

  14. 14

    Graham: Good point.

  15. 15

@Youngshoutman: Grapes has never needed a “reason” to insult someone — it’s part of his shtick. Like Don Rickles. I thought everyone knew that!

And yes, according to some folks, free speech means saying whatever you like; and if someone is offended, too bad. That very thin line between free speech and hate speech is the reason for the existence of the Human Rights Commisions.
