One of the world’s most prominent statesmen – Dominique Strauss-Kahn – had his respected career in international politics  (he was on the way to becoming President of France) destroyed when a 33-year-old African hotel maid spread lies about him.

How do we know they were lies?  Because her story of the so-called rape changed nearly every time she told it.  Because she told an egregious lie about being gang-raped in Africa.  Because she got in touch with an old jail-bird to discuss how the Strauss-Kahn affair could be exploited financially.

The New York D.A.”s office ceased to believe.  They didn’t think a jury would believe her.  Sensibly they dropped the charges.

Strauss-Kahn is now free to try to pick up his tattered career.

Should the hotel maid be charged with a crime because she caused so much damage to others?

Why would the hotel maid lie?

What do you think?  I  think there was sex in the hotelroom, but it was consensual.

Is this the place where I say, “I told you so!”?

They both got their lumps and lost and deservedly so. Why haven’t we heard from the hotel operators?. We know that they have something to say.

  3. 3

I think that Dominique Strauss is a scum bag and at least he’s been “outed”..
The real story will come to light eventually. His wife will divorce him (although women at this level seem to hang in there), and he will repeat his behaviour.
That entitlement factor is a mighty force.

  4. 4

Patti, you’re forgetting something very important — Strauss is European. And so is his wife. They have been brought up with completely different attitudes towards sex and marriage from North Americans.

Don’t hold your breath about their divorcing or anything else.

If you felt the sex in the hotel room was consensual, Neil, do you think that constituted anything criminal or against the law? I am inferring that there was prostitution involved and, if so, does the male have any responsibilities in this regard (ie, breaking the law)?

  6. 6

Lady Janus- I agree that Europeans have grown up to “grin & bear it”. I know plenty who have lived their lives with broken hearts.
How does that explain the American wives in high places? John Edwards, Fallwell, Spitzer, Kennedy, etc. etc.
Tony- I agree with you, but I guess they need proof and after all “boys will be boys”. I think that’s really the attitude underlying the whole story.

  7. 7

Patti, it’s not so much a grin-and-bear-it attitude as much as it’s a sex-happens attitude. Europeans are much more mature about their sexualities than North Americans are.

And as far as I know, American wives and their attitudes have nothing to do with this story.

Well, if he broke the law why didn ‘t Cyrus Vance Jr. charge him with a criminal offense?

So, sexual promiscuity is now called sexual maturity?
I prefer respect, love and loyalty any day.

  13. 13

Patti, you’re allowed to prefer whatever you like. And others are allowed their own preferences. There are no laws prohibiting what you call “promiscuity.” In fact, insisting that one’s own preference is the only correct one by giving everyone else’s preferences nasty lables is childish and combative.

Live your own life by your own chosen standards and leave others’ lives to them.

  14. 14

    I dare say my opinion.
I said “I prefer”, within the context of my marriage. I didn’t suggest that anyone else should “prefer”. I really don’t care how you live your life, or anyone else, for that matter, but I do like hearing a variety of opinions, yours included.
BTW- There is a law against promiscuity- Prostitution. However, the buyers are not charged very often. I guess that would fall under the title of one-sided sexual maturity.
