Later in the fall the CBC will celebrate its 75th birthday.

The Mother Corporation is in a bind.  It has a mandate to provide Canadians with first-rate Canadian content.  The problem is that producing Canadian content is a very expensive proposition.  It is much easier and more economical to purchase cheap American shows.

Which begs the question.  Should the CBC get more funding from the public purse?  As it stands now, the Mother Corp receives $1.2 billion in an operating grant from the feds plus another $125 million from Ottawa.   The CBC generates $567 million from advertising as well as commercial enterprises.

So what does it cost the Canadian citizen to fund the CBC?   It costs $34.

This compares to $91 for the BBC in Britain.  To $42  for the Australian Broadcasting system.

Should the CBC do more Canadian programming?

What are your favourite CBC shows?

Do you watch Peter Mansbridge on the National?

Should the CBC get more taxpayer money?

What do you think?

The answer is to change the mandate. Drop the “Canadfian-only” and simply provide first-rate content from wherever it can be had. Most Canadians don’t want Canadian content, anyway; they just want to be informed and entertained. Why does it matter if the one reading the news or doing the entertaining be Canadian?

    Lady Janus,

So why don’t we drop the CBC alltogether and just watch American television.

    william wallace Says:

The money FUNDING should come from advertising only
it not for govt via taxpayer in funding failing organizations.

The organzation should be closed down / its programmes
worthless // as its news content. WHY ?? should canadian
people continue fund an pointless failing private company.

In regard to the BBC (Britain) the true cost of its licence is
    2 pounds ( $4 ) a year per household // covering the cost
of TV masts as upkeep that people receiving TV channels.

The BBC add another 180 pounds ($360) to a TV licence
fee in funding BBC tv channels ( a yearly $4 tv licence / is
raised unto ($363) such funding of the BBC tv channels is
totally fraudulant // its nowhere written in law the people be
responsible in funding the BBC tv // than they responsible
funding SKY tv or CABLE TV or in funding Canada’s CBC.

How can such a fraud be allowed continue ???. Such done
by the BBC allowing the govt of the day to use the BBC as
a platform to spin out its endless proaganda /// news items
that are but coming from the twilight zone. / A example but
the non existant “WEAPONS OF Mass DESTRUCTION” /as
claimed held by IRAQ justifying an invasion of middle east
where hundreds of thousands were killed // bringing untold
    suffering // untold destruction /torture /murder death/ tears.

Rewarding BBC as being a platform for GOVT propaganda
the BBC allowed continue / collect $hundreds of millions via
its fraudulant TV licence /spinning out endless propaganda.

Yearly the british taxpayer via a fraudulant TV licence being
( forced pour $hundreds of millions into the coffers of / BBC
thus BBC managment paying themselves vast salaries / with
bonuses that equaling their salaries// The BBC MAnagment
of which there many // receiving payments of $millions yearly.

A appalling fraud paid for by an british taxpayer.Should any
fail paying a TV licence / they threatened with imprisonment
or given a ($2000) fine. Or given both fine as imprisonment.

With news programmes BBC staff interview other BBC staff
as all other friends from television or such newspaper world.

All in the media as puppets spin out the endlesss continued
brainwashing of the public // OVER the past decade such in
main being anti muslim propaganda. In RUSSIA being made
a friend of western nations / western nations need Russia’s
vast resources OIL /GAS / ETC. An USA not having Russia
as A great enemy // thus to justify a ever expanding military
force A USA needed to replace the great threat of RUSSIA
such achieved by the constant media bliitz against muslims
thus muslims became the great threat ( no longer russia)..

It could not be said muslims had a nuclear threat // so the
USA / BRITISH back room boys came up with “WEAPONS
OF MASS DESTRUCTION” which of course meaningless
nonsense // yet it sounded good // as allowed a invasion
of the middle east// setting up more puppet govts / where
western nations controling middle easts /vast oil reserves.

    Good idea, Neil.

Except for that wonderful, recent upstart, Sun News, which features the likes of Ezra Levant and Brian Lilley. They should be available everywhere!

  5. 5

DID I hear right? Duceppe has a job with the CBC!

  6. 6

Neil, you’re like a pendulum — all swing and no middle!

I didn’t say no Canadian content. I said why not drop the Canadian-only part of it?

Duceppe has a job with the CBC. That’s certainly news to me.

    Cate McB Says:

Yes, this from the CBC online:

“Former Bloc Québécois leader Gilles Duceppe has resigned from his new job as a commentator for Radio-Canada before ever making it to air.

Duceppe was recruited to be a weekly columnist on radio program Médium Large, scheduled to start Aug. 22.

But he backed away from the gig “after a misunderstanding about the nature of his mandate,” CBC’s French-language service said.

Show producers signed up the former Bloc leader to comment on issues in a variety of areas, including culture, science and sports. The deal was called off Wednesday after Duceppe found out he wouldn’t be able to talk politics.

CBC and Radio-Canada’s code of journalism standards and practices stipulates a two-year “cooling off” period for ex-politicians who want to comment or report on politics.

Duceppe wasn’t aware of the rule and decided to pass up the opportunity after being informed of the policy.”

What the heck would Gilles Duceppe know about culture, science & sports. He lived and breathed in fantasy land for so many years!
