Cigarettes will kill six million people this year.  Smoking is the most preventable disease leading to death on the face of the earth.  Smoking is one of the biggest healh threats the world has ever faced.  Part of the problem is that governments fail to crack dlown on smokers, half of whom will die.

One government is planning to crack down hard.  Iceland is considering banning cigarettes and making them by prescription only.  They would be banned from all retail outlets.  Only drug stores would be able to sell cigarettes to customers with a valid medical certificate.

First doctors would help smokers get off the weed.  If they could not the doctor would provide a prescription for a limited number of cigarettes.

So far I have not even mentioned the billions of dollar sin health care costs racked up by smokers in Canada and elsewhere.

Should cigarettes be on prescription?

What do you think?

That may work for Iceland, an ethnically uniform society isolated on an island in the North Atlantic. Doing the same in Canada would open the door to illegal commerce in cigarettes and give the criminals a rich new source of income.

So the other half of smokers will not die – wow, they’ve cracked it!!!!

Doctors usually abide by the Hippocratic oath – do no harm – how could a doctor then hand someone a script for cigarettes which will injure their body? I was a 3 pack a day smoker. How does one get off of smoking? I think it calls for an earth rattling situation as in meeting up with an earth rattling new girl friend who won’t kiss you because you have an earth rattling breath that smells like a sewer. Remember, there is candy from Candy after one gives up smoking..

“…how could a doctor then hand someone a script for cigarettes which will injure their body?”

Sometimes, there is no “no harm.” Sometimes, the best you can accomplish is “less harm.” And in the case of really heavy smokers whose bodies have acclimatized to the constant infusion of the drug, nicotine, cold turkey quitting will cause more harm than a reduced amount and gradual weaning from it. Cold turkey is more of a shock to the body than most people think, and in some cases, it can be fatal.

Besides, with the numbers of incidents of iatrogenic poisoning, it seems to me that the Hypocratic Oath is more of a list of suggestions than actual laws. Add that to the fact that most doctors do not take that oath anymore, and what do you have?

In Sweden, about 25% of male smokers were able to quit because they switched over to “snus”, which is a form of smokeless tobacco. According to the very limted research I’ve seen on the internet (and, yes, a lot of it from the tobacco industry itself), snus has about 1/50th the incident of cancer.

    Yet Canada has banned it.

It seems to me the lesser of two evils and I can’t for the life of me understand why it isn’t available in Canada. It is in the States.

As a heavy duty smoker in the past, and having been a bit concerned about the potential shock of withdrawal, I learned that for most of the nicotine to leave the body takes 6 weeks. Therefore the stratagy I used was to decrease my 75 cigarette a day consumption by 2 cigarettes a day and when I reached the 6 a day level I stopped completely. I also stopped drinking coffee which was part and parcel of the addictive ceremony. There was one more problem that surfaced, and that was I didn’t know what to do with my hands which became agitated as they had lost their main means of employment. I also found out that when the urge to smoke came upon me all I had to do was wait 10 minutes, find something to do, and the urge would pass. I had thought that the urge would take all day, but not so in my case.
To my knowledge doctors have never taken the Hippocratic Oath, they just abided by it. As to a Hypocratic Oath, I’m afraid that I cannot write about it as I have never heard of it.

I am a former smoker. I kicked the habit, using patches and lots of strategies, as Jim mentions, and my husband and I have saved over 50,000$ in after tax money! Had we continued, we would be smoking one of our QPP checks, every month.
It’s the one thing that I am most proud of in my entire life!
However, it’s a serious addiction, very dangerous, and very ugly.
I can’t think of ways to get people to stop smoking, so the emphasis should be on youth and prevention. In time, it will become socially unacceptable by any standards.
Maybe, if YOUNG patients knew their doctor would refuse treatment to them if they smoke…insurance companies are getting away with it.
