Yesterday I overheard a conversation between two women, both probably in their sixties.  They were discussing how to treat the hired help when they went on holidays i.e. their cleaning ladies.

One woman says she  pays her cleaning lady $70 for about five hours once a week.  When she goes on holidays for three weeks, she  simply discontinues the cleaning lady’s services for that period of time.

The other woman says she pays her cleaning lady $60 for about five hours once a week.  However, when she goes on holiday, also for about three weeks, she continues to pay her cleaning lady during thagt period – a total of $180, even though the cleaning lady does not come to her house.  Her rationale is that she feels it is unfair to cut off her cleaning lady while she (her mistress) goes on holiday.

Where do you come down on this argument?

What is the cleaning lady worth?

What do you think?

What does the cleaning lady think she’s worth? That’s the real question, isn’t it? If you were the cleaning lady, which would you prefer?

No, the real question is what is fair? Obviously the woman who pays her cleaning lady even if the former is on holidays is the fair deal.

In this day and age, I think we can negotiate the terms of employment. If you have a super, reliable, cleaning lady, I would think that you would consider keeping her happy.
