Pope Benedict is scheduled to visit his native Germany this September.  Now a German Catholic bishop has inflamed Catholic-Protestant relations in that country.

Bishop Ludwig Muellert has demanded that the Protestant Church officially apologize for Luther’s calling the Pope “Anti-Christ.”  By doing so, the bishop contended that Luther “intended to strike the Catholic Church’s sacramental understanding of itself.”

Should the German Protestant church aplogize for Luther’s remarks?

What do you think?

On another front entirely, I notice that Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, announced this morning that he will not be running in 2012.  Another Republican heavyweight concludes that he cannot beat Obama.

I don’t care. I’m perfectly happy to let by-gones be by-gones. I’m getting tired of this cult of apologizing on behalf of those who lived hundreds of years ago. Does it really matter?

There are still lots of Protestants who think TODAY’s pope is the anti-Christ. I’d rather they’d spend energy convincing them of their error. Asking for apologies is easier.

I would be surprised if there were many Protestants in Canada think the Pope is aanti-Christ. Also he just received a rousing welcome on his trip to England. And just this week-end he spoke to the astronauts in space.

Speaking of President Obama, next week he will be paying a visit to his kissing cousins in Ireland. Henceforth he shall be known as President O’bama.

As to Luther, let him speak for himself. Dig him up.
Whilst he’s here, as him if he has an old-fashioned remedy for worms.

I agree with Suzanne that an apology for what one man said centuries ago is pointless. Instead, the Pope ought to demonstrate a more obvious Christ-likeness, i.e. divestment of all that elaborate regalia, stark simplicity of lifestyle, more humility in the face of the suffering the Church has inflicted on people through the ages, service to the poor and abused, deeper empathy for the marginalized, compassion for the difficult decisions people make that may be less than the ideal, etc. We all could do with a dose more of Christ-likeness.

I suspect there a number of Canadians who think the Pope is the anti-Christ. Have you spoken to any fundies lately?

And Pawlenty is going to run for the Republican nomination. He’s not running away. I believe there was another man placing himself in competition, but his name escapes me.

The last Pope apologized for the sacking on Constantinople by the horde that was the Fourth Crusade. Gee, that was nice. So did the Pope then convert? No? Still got a problem to work through I guess. Another round of apologies are in order in another 800 years or so.

    Neil McKenty Says:

    Pawlenty could win thebrass ring.

The other candidate you are thinking of may be Jon Huntsman whom Obama appointed ambassador to China.
