The panel that decides who receives an Order of Canada is considering stripping Conrad black of the honour.   The rules provide the award can be revoked if a person is convicted of a crime.

Black went back to prison last week to serve out his term of 13 months.

Only four people have ever been stripped of the Order of Canada.

My wife thinks it’s silly to deprive Black of this honour which he justly earnt.  She argues that he has already sufferred enough and this is kicking a man when he is down.

Should Black lose his Order of Canada?

what do you think?

    Tony Kondaks Says:

Black should keep his; strip Brian « money-launderer » Mulroney of his (assuming he has one).

    Gunnar Says:

I believe Black should lose his Order of Canada. This honour is not like a university diploma earned years ago after hard study. It is a badge of honour that often is worn on the lapel to announce to the world that here is an honourable man or woman. There is no honour left in this case.

If I understand the immigration laws right, Black will have to reapply for status as legal resident. A requirement for such status is, I believe, a crime-free record. If so, equality before the law should mean that Black be denied residency in Canada.

Neil: Your wife wins this one. I never really understood what he did that was so terrible. He was arrogant & took money out of his company.
Oops, once again, sounds like our government! :-)

  4. 4

I’m with Patti and your wife, Neil. Under Canadian law, what « crime » did he commit here?

  5. 5
    Barbara Says:

Refresh my memory, what exactly did he do to earn the Order of Canada? What is the criterion for awarding such a prestigious honour? Are noncitizens awarded this Order of Canada? Why were others stripped of the honour?

  6. 6
    Neil McKenty Says:

Black received the honour because he made a remakable contribution to the world of media and journalism. The order is given for meitorious e service. It can be awarded tp non=Canadians. Four have lost the order because of criminal activity and racist remarks.

Interestingly, Garth Drabinsky, the Toronto theatre entrepeneur, has just been found guilty of fraud and stands to lose his Order.

    jim Says:

My question, to myself is, would I want to wear the same odor as Black if I were called to the Canadian dubbing room. I think that Black will agree that his head has come from, above the clouds, to below the clouds, due to his comeuppance. Must admit though that he is still nigh on high, ‘way up thar.

That question asks both ways, Jim…perhaps Tubby wouldn’t like the way you smell, either…

  9. 9
    jim Says:

Now, now Lady Janus I will not stroke the cat against the lie of her fur. One never knows the length of her claws. In the meantime have a nice day.

  10. 10

Jim: Did you mean odor (smell) or Order (of Canada)?
