IS THE VATICAN A VICTIM?

Relations between Ireland and the Vatican are at their lowest ebb in history. In the latest move  a group of septuagarian male celibates in Rome decided that the Vatican’s  ambassador to Ireland should be called home.

Now that’s a real laugher.  Let me explain why.

In 1996 the Irish bishops signed an agreement to turn sexual abusers over to the police.  In January 1997, a secret letter went out from Rome to the Irish bishos (via the papalo nuncio)  warning them that canon law trumped civil law when it came to reporting sex cases.

When this subterfuge became public the Irish government went ballistic.  Enda Kennedy, the Prime Minister, charged the Vatican was narcisstic, triumphalist, dysfunctional, elitist.

Clearly Ireland was the injured party.  Normally the injured party would jump in and recall its envoy.  But guess what.  A coterie of septuagarian male celibates in the Vatican quickly recalled their own ambassador thus giving the signal that Rome was the injured party and this was the way to recapture the high road.

What a bunch of game-playing.

Does the Vatican get it?

Is the Vatican the victim?

What do you think?

Canon law NEVER trumps state law.

The Vatican is wrong, and embarrassed at being outmanoevered in its attempt to undermine the government of a country whose guest it is.

The Vatican finally blew it. They blew themselves right out of town. There are 80 million Irish or Irish descendents in the world, about half of which are in the U.S. and Canada. How does one get all of the sons and daughters of Erin to send B16 a terse note ostracizing him for using Hitlerite tactics. Those tactics (the big lies, breaking the laws using subterfuge, and not bring to trial their criminal priests ) were in play when the pope lived in Germany. I think the Vatican as the focal point for the Catholic Church world wide will one day be vacated, except possibly for Italy. Countries around the world will each have its own central authority headed by God and assisted by a Cardinal-Bishop. A synod will be held once in a while to discuss cohesion. The system will be similar to that used by the Jews. Or maybe something else. How about the fact that the Muslims who have run out of space of their own in Virginia, are using the local synagogue during Ramadam. When the head honchos of each religion bump into each other the Rabbi says “Salaam” only to be answered with “Shalom”.

For anyone who has not heard the full speech of Prime Minister Kennedy, it can be viewed on YouTube here : http://youtu.be/mo5MXrqbDeA

It is not Ireland, but the children and teenagers of Ireland who are the victims, as Prime Minister Kennedy points out with force and poignancy.
